Majdalawi fabric, the indigo-dyed cotton with striking fuchsia or turquoise stripes interwoven with silk threads, was the signature material of women’s dress in the southern coastal area of historic Palestine. Before the Palestinian catastrophe in 1948 (when the Palestinian homeland was lost to the State of Israel and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians forced into exile), Palestine had several textile-producing centres, one of which was the city of Majdal (today the Israeli city of Ashkelon). The Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children sustains the almost lost art of majdalawi fabric through Atfaluna Crafts, a special income-generation project which supports and economically empowers hearing-impaired adults in the Gaza Strip.
