Hassoon Bird Ornament
Hassoon Bird Ornament

A colourful little bird, hand-stitched in red or blue. The Hassoon bird, (حَسّون), is much loved in Palestine, not just for its beautiful plumage but also for its musicality. It is seen as a symbol of endurance, fruitfulness, and persistence. It is celebrated in song and poetry, as well as being a popular cage bird. In this ornament, the women artisans of Sulafa have symbolised the longing for freedom universal in Gaza in traditional Palestinian tartreez (تَطْريز). We know this bird as the European goldfinch, and, in Christian symbolism is associated with Christ's Passion, specifically with his crown of thorns because it eats the  seeds of thistles. The bird has appeared inmany classical paintings of the Madonna and Christ child, symbolising  the premonition  Jesus and Mary had of the crucifiction. In Gaza, the Hasson bird is a very popular with bird  breeders and owners train the birds to sing melodies.  Birds with the  ability to sing harmoniously are entered into contests locally and the hope of many owners is to one day take part in international competitions, when Israel's blockade of Gaza is ended.
